9.3. Replacement of covers of hinges of equal angular speeds

EXTERNAL HINGE

Removal

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Remove a power shaft.
2. Fix a power shaft in a vice with soft sponges and remove collars of fastening of a cover.
3. Shift a protective cover down a shaft.
4. Using the hammer or a soft drift, sharply strike the hinge and remove the hinge from a shaft.
5. Remove a lock ring from a flute of a power shaft. At installation of the CV JOINT it is necessary to use a new lock ring.
6. Remove a rubber protective cover from a power shaft.
7. Using the corresponding solvent, clear the CV JOINT and dry up it. Examine the hinge.
8. Check the course of balls of the hinge, and also balls for existence of damages.
9. Check paths on which hinge balls, on an internal and external part of the hinge move.
10. If there is a wear of any detail of the hinge, it is necessary to replace the hinge completely. If the hinge in satisfactory condition, then it is necessary to use a repair set of details consisting of a new protective cover, a lock ring, collars and lubricant of the hinge.

Installation

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Plastic rings (a photo at the left) are located on outer side of a protective cover. Pull inside of a protective cover over a shaft (it is specified by an arrow a photo on the right).
2. Install the internal end of a protective cover in a flute of a power shaft or on the plastic plug (if it is used).
3. Establish a new lock ring in a flute on the end of a power shaft.
4. Combine vents of the hinge and a power shaft and install the hinge on a power shaft before fixing by its lock ring.
5. Fill the hinge with lubricant and establish a protective cover in a hinge flute.
6. Fix a protective cover by collars, using a hook and flat-nose pliers.
7. Bend the acting end of a collar and cut off its excess part.
8. Curtail the end of a collar near a bracket.
9. Press a bracket to a collar.
10. Raise the internal end of a protective cover for alignment of pressure of air under a cover, then fix by a collar.
11. Check smoothness of turn of the CV JOINT and install a power shaft on the car.

INTERNAL HINGE

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Remove a power shaft from the car.
2. Fix a power shaft in a vice with soft sponges and remove collars of fastening of a cover. Shift a protective cover down a shaft. Using the hammer or a soft drift, sharply strike the hinge and remove the hinge from a shaft. Remove a lock ring from a flute of a power shaft. At installation of the CV JOINT it is necessary to use a new lock ring.
3. Remove a protective cover of the external hinge and if it is established, the plastic plug of fastening of the internal end of a cover.
4. Remove collars of fastening of a protective cover of the internal hinge and shift a protective cover on a shaft. Since the protective cover is removed, it is possible to remove an external part of the internal hinge from a shaft.
5. Take the plastic plug from a cover.
6. Using solvent, clear the hinge and dry it.

Check

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Check details of the internal hinge for wear. Basic rollers have to rotate smoothly and evenly.
2. If when checking the internal hinge defects are found, then it is necessary to replace a power shaft entirely.
3. Grease a working part of the internal hinge.
4. Clear a power shaft of a rust and sharp edges which can damage a protective cover at its installation. Pull over a shaft a protective cover of the internal hinge before installation of a cover in a flute.
5. Install the internal hinge on a power shaft and fix a protective cover in hinge flutes. Fix a protective cover by collars.
6. Install the external CV JOINT (see above).
