Peugeot 406 Saloon was presented at the beginning of 1996. At first models with the following engines were offered: 1.6-(1580 cm3), 1.8-(1761 cm3) and the 2.0th (1998 cm3) liter petrol engines and 1.9-liter (1905 cm3) turbodiesel engine.

Petrol engines of the XU series have the top arrangement of a cam-shaft and four cylinders; the engine 1.6-liter the SOHC type with 8 valves, and engines 1.8-and 2.0-liter the DOHC type with 16 valves. The diesel engine from the SOHC XUD series with 8 valves.

The engine is installed cross in a forward part of the car, with the transmission installed on the left side of the engine. All cars are equipped with the manual transmission (automatic transmission was presented later on some engines).

All models have completely independent forward and back suspension brackets which are turning on shock-absorbers and cylindrical springs, and also absolutely unique system of a dovorot of back wheels.

Wide range of the standard equipment and equipment delivered under the order to satisfy the majority of tastes, including the central lock, power windows and the electric hatch is provided. The air conditioning system was delivered only under the order.

In the summer of 1996 the turbodiesel engine having 12 valves was presented 2.1-liter (2088 cm3).

At the beginning of 1997 presented to Peugeot the ESTATE model (station wagon), and also the petrol V6 engine (which is not presented in this guide). However these cars differ in little changes.

On condition of performance of the regular service recommended by the producer, the car will be reliable and economic. The motor compartment is well designed also the majority of the places demanding frequent service, easily well.
